  • Jenkintown has a new tax collector, after former tax collector Mike O’Neill resigned last month amidst probes into suspicious bank activity on his part.

Monday night borough council appointed Paul Pope, a Jenkintown information technology professional, as the new tax collector.

“The position, I see it as an opportunity to serve Jenkintown. Jenkintown is a great town. I was sad to see what happened,” Pope said.

Pope has been living in Jenkintown for 22 years, with his wife, Elizabeth Pope, who served as tax collector for the borough from 1990 through 2002, until O’Neill took over the position.

“My wife was a tax collector for 12 years, I’m aware of how the job works, and I have been an IT professional for 30 years, and I’m quite familiar with accounting applications, which gives me the experience for doing this,” Pope said.

O’Neill resigned Feb. 1, after borough Solicitor Michael Clarke met with him after receiving notice from TD Bank of suspicious activity on O’Neill’s bank account. O’Neill is still under investigation by the Montgomery County District Attorney. Borough Manager Michael English served as the interim tax collector in the borough until council could appoint a replacement.

“Mike O’Neill was a great guy and I hope he sorts out his problem. But I’m willing to sort things out pretty quickly and get moving,” Pope said.

Pope will serve as a bonded tax collector, a part-time position which comes with a salary of $24,000, until the end of the term in 2011, at which point he said he intends to run for the position.
