Gift from McGill Faculty of Law alumnus Stephen Halperin creates two funds - one for students in Law and one for students in joint Law-Social Work program.
The lawyer who led the Goodmans' team in the hotly-contested battle for control of the Schneider Corporation is now paving the way for McGill students to have the same success in corporate law. Stephen Halperin, BCL’75, LLB’78, and his wife Andrea Halperin, BSW’75, MSW’75, have made a generous $150,000 gift to stimulate innovative teaching initiatives in corporate and business law at McGill, and an additional gift of $50,000 to support McGill’s dual-degree program in Law and Social Work.
"Corporate law and social work are distinct fields, but the dual nature of this gift perfectly reflects the mindset of many of our students, who don't feel they have to choose one or the other," said Professor Daniel Jutras, the Interim Dean of McGill's Faculty of Law. "This gift underlines the mission of the Faculty, which is to provide the highest quality legal education to students who share a strong commitment to justice and public service."
The gift from the Halperins will be used to create two funds:
As a partner with Goodmans in Toronto, Stephen Halperin has built his career on high profile transactions. Lexpert called him one of Canada's "Top 30 Corporate Dealmakers", and the International Financial Law Review described him as "one of the most experienced and respected M&A counsel in Canada." Hein has taught at the University of Toronto, and lectured at several other Canadian law schools. He is also a member of the Faculty Advisory Board at McGill's Faculty of Law.
Andrea Halperin is an established Toronto-based registered marriage and family therapist. She earned both her undergraduate and master's degree from the School of Social Work within McGill's Faculty of Arts.
"We're tremendously grateful to both of the Halperins for their generosity, and for helping to inspire our other alumni, as well as our faculty, and the many students who will benefit from their support," said Jutras.
The Halperin gifts were made as part of Campaign McGill: History in the Making. Publicly launched in October 2007, this drive is raising the funds needed to ensure McGill remains one of the world's great research-intensive, student-centred universities.
Thanks to the collective contributions of 70,000 donors around the world, Campaign McGill has surpassed the $500-million mark - and is well-positioned to reach its $750-million target, the largest starting goal at the time of any fundraising drive in the history of Canadian universities.

OXFORD, England, February 17, 2010
OXFORD, England, February 17, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — "After reading BIG FAT LIES you will never trust the government again"
- Dr John Briffa
In a hard-hitting new book 'BIG FAT LIES – IS YOUR GOVERNMENT MAKING YOU
FAT?', Hannah Sutter turns the analytical eye of a lawyer onto the facts and
myths of obesity, health and diet.
The proportion of men and women classed as obese has risen steeply in
recent years. However, there has been no particular increase in the
number of people who are overweight, and calorie intake has generally
decreased. So we are eating less but obesity has increased. What's going on?
Lawyer and diet expert Hannah Sutter exposes lies, misinformation and
distortion in the basic health guidelines promoted by the government, the
NHS, the Food Standards Agency and other esteemed 'expert' authorities. From
the calorie -counting and exercise myths to the food pyramid, ketosis and BMI
misinformation, Sutter uncovers a series of highly disturbing fictions
that underpin government health policy throughout the world.
She calls into question received wisdom on the central tenets of health
policy with regards to diet and looks at who is advising us and what they
are saying, before concluding that we are all being misled. It is the
ultimate questioning of the mantra: eat less, do more, lose weight.
Hannah Sutter had an extremely successful career in the City as a
corporate lawyer, where her relentless pursuit of the truth saved her
clients staggering sums of money. Sutter's switch to nutrition was fuelled by
this passion for integrity of argument and proposition. After watching two
fat men get thin in a way that was simply incompatible with commonly accepted
'expert' dietary advice, she was compelled to apply her formidable
forensic skills to discovering why. Sutter now runs Go Lower, a realistic,
sustainable, healthy inch-loss programme dedicated to good nutrition.
Sutter is an impassioned and experienced speaker and is available for
interview.
